You can prevent automatic opening of .PDF documents by disabling the Adobe Acrobat browser plugin. This will allow you choose another action for PDF links, such as opening them in Adobe Reader as an external helper application. Use one of these methods:

"Open in PDF viewer" extension opens PDF links in your default external PDF viewer application like Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit PDF reader. This extension adds a context menu item to your browser context menu over PDF links. When the context menu is clicked, the extension downloads PDF file into your default download directory and then executes external application to open this PDF file.

After this one-time setup, you can automatically view any PDF document.


This is not useful because we need the ability to click on a SharePoint link and have it open directly in Adobe Pro. The browser PDF viewers is almost completely useless for business and professional needs. Currently I have about 500 copies of the same file downloaded, because this seems to be the fastest way to open them in a useful application, while maintain live revision control.


Most of our PDF links instruct the browser to open a PDF file in a new tab or window. If you want to download the PDF file instead of opening it, bring up the help menu by right-clicking (Control-click on a Macintosh) on the link and then choose the option that allows you to save the file.


Adobe doesn't support multiple versions of Reader orAcrobat on the same computer. Multiple versions simultaneously installed canlead to software conflicts and errors. If you are experiencing a problem viewingPDF files, uninstall all versions of Reader orAcrobat and then reinstall only one version of the product. Installing a viewer on your computer will allow you to view files (with filename extensions like .doc, .ppt, .xls, .pdf, etc.) when you don't have the software that was used to create the files.


The problem exists not only for files you link to through resources. We had trouble with .doc files linked to from html page type resources. Note: The next time you select a link to a PDF file in Navigator, a dialog box will appear that asks what you would like to do with the file. If you select "Open it," Navigator will open the PDF file in your Acrobat viewer as a helper appliction. If you select "Save it to disk," Navigator will save the PDF file to your hard disk, from where you can open it later.


You can download PDF files to your hard disk either from a Web page's link or using an Acrobat viewer's Save As command. After you download a PDF file to your hard disk, you can copy text, distribute the file, or save the file to a disk.


To download a PDF file from a link: 1. Right-click the link to a PDF file, then choose Save Link As from the pop-up menu. 2. In the Save As dialog box, select a location on your hard disk, then click Save.


If your browser does not have native or plug-in support for the PDF MIME type, your web browser can either be configured to launch an external "helper application" or it will download the file for external viewing. Instructions for configuring popular web browsers are available from Adobe.


Free Adobe Acrobat Readers and PDF plug-ins are available for the Macintosh, Microsoft DOS, Microsoft Windows, and Sun Unix systems.
